If you're planning to earn your FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate through your aviation maintenance experience, one document will play a critical role in your journey: FAA Form 8610-2. For many experienced aircraft maintenance technicians, the 8610-2 is the first official step toward becoming an FAA-certificated mechanic. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most misunderstood parts of the certification process.

An A&P license is officially known as an FAA Mechanic Certificate with Airframe and/or Powerplant ratings. The Airframe rating covers aircraft structures, systems, flight controls, landing gear, electrical systems, and other aircraft-related areas. The Powerplant rating covers engines, fuel systems, ignition systems, propellers, turbine engines, reciprocating engines, and related systems.
